A Creed of Iron: The Pagan Ideology of Wotansvolk

Although Wotansvolk is the product of a team, each individual has a distinct role. The religious philosophy of Wotansvolk discussed hereafter is thus not identical with the heathen ideology of David Lane. Lane’s Odinist writings revolved around its warrior aspect and, though blended with numerology and mystery religions, had a distinct political orientation in its call for an armed Aryan revolution. Much like Christensen and Kaldenberg, Lane was largely indifferent to Norse ceremonial practice and left undeveloped most nonwarrior aspects. It was not until the incarcerated Odinist gođi Danny Johnson was transferred to the Florence penitentiary in 1998 that Lane and his prison kindred were really introduced to the richness of pagan ceremonies. The evolving Wotansvolk creed and its ceremonies and magic are mainly a product of Ron McVan.

The Wotansvolk creed is essentially a racial mysticism inspired in part by Aryan pre-Christian pagan traditions, Gnosticism, Theosophy, and Jungian psychology. Dissatisfied with the multiracial reworking of the American nation, Wotansvolk aims at “reaching deep into the ancestral past” to reconnect with the “roots of the Aryan race” in order to redevelop a lost “folk consciousness” (McVan 1996). Asserting that each race has a genetic pool of spiritual identity, McVan (1997, 2) understands Wotanism as “the inner voice of the Aryan soul, which links the infinite past with the infinite future.” Accordingly, McVan believes that “all Aryans today retain an element of Wotan consciousness” (ibid., 29), a revival of which would liberate the white man. To Wotansvolk, Wotan symbolizes “the essential soul and spirit of the Aryan folk made manifest” (ibid., 16). As an iron-willed warrior God, Wotan is said to instill in the white race the determination and heroic qualities necessary for them to arise victoriously in the ongoing struggle for Aryan survival and prosperity. Wotansvolk members cast their work as a continuation of the efforts of turn-of-the-century Ariosophist Guido von List, philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, and psychoanalyst Carl Jung, the goal being to return Aryan man to his perceived true nature. Wotansvolk teaches that each race is by nature unique, given distinct qualities truly its own. To survive and evolve along the desired path of racial greatness, a race must develop a high level of folk consciousness, that is, be in touch with its racial soul. Each race is thus said to possess a spiritual heritage understood as a Jungian collective unconscious. “Every race has its soul and every soul its race.”24

Engraved in the unconscious of each member of a race, then, are powerful archetypes that can be made conscious by performing the rituals and ceremonies developed by the ancestors in times immemorial. “Our ancient White ancestors understood that in order to ensure our heritage and racial survival, expansion and advancement, we must initiate means to galvanize our Folk Consciousness. Allegories, [rituals,] and myths were developed along with a variety of archetypical gods which best represented Nature’s Law and the folk consciousness.”25 These archetypes are the gods of the blood, who will exist as long as there are living members of the race.
